Filming on the 22nd October

Me and Emily took time out of our lesson in the afternoon to drive to Hertford East Train Station to film the shots of the train arriving and departing from the station.
We set up our camera and tri-pod on the left side of the station to avoid filming any members of the public. We successfully shot the train shots and came back to school to capture the footage.
Our team mate Sam Walton wrote a letter to Ware Train Station which is connected to Hertford Train Station to ask permission to film in the station. We had no reply from them so we went on a filmed anyway.
A train driver asked me and Emily on the platform if we had permission and we politely stated that we had sent a letter previously. She accepted this and gave us her permission.

This is the letter we had sent to the Train Station:

Dear Sir/Madam

I am a sixth former studying A-Level Media Studies at Chauncy School. I am currently planning my final video production and I am writing to ask your permission to film outside and on the platform at Ware Station.

This filming would last approximately 30minutes, and would not require filming of the general public. Only three students would be involved.

If you require further details you are welcome to contact my Media Studies teacher Mrs Allison at Chauncy School on 01920 411 200. In addition, you can also contact me on 07702 100060.

Yours Faithfully.

Changing Locations and Filming on the 20th

Our actress Georgia could not join us in filming in Cheshunt park due to lack of transport so we had to make our way to Ware Town to do the filming in a park called The Priory.
The Priory is a secluded public park where there is a field and some woods. This was ideal for filming our runing shots because it meant that there were scenic pathways and closed in trees.
Here we filmed multiple shots of Georgia running to include inbetween certain shots in our production. We used a variety of different camera angles such as high angle shots and low angle shots, shots of just her feet and long shots of her running.
I feel this was successful because this now means we only need to film the horses galloping and the lip syncing untill we have finished filming completely.
I like these shots because the autumn leaves are on the floor and the oranges and browns compliment the white dress she is wearing.

We will now carry on with our editing in order to complete our first cut by the intended deadline.

Where We Are Now

We now have two weeks today till our first cut has to be prsented, I feel we are progressing successfully through our production and should meet this deadline.
We have few things left to do but we have arranged to come back into school during the half term to finish off editing if needed. We have yet to to book a computer to use in the holidays.

We need to finish off filming the running scenes, the horses scenes and the train arriving and departing scenes. Untill we do this we cannot finish our production.

How We Edited The Music

  • Downloaded a W.A.V file of the audio track
  • Imported the audio file into cubase, into a new project on an audio track
  • Worked out the timing of where the song needed to be cut from the original song
  • Cut the track into sections and deleted unwanted bars
  • Moved uncut sections together and pasted them together using the editing tool
  • Faded out the end of the audio track using 'processing' and 'fade out' tools
  • Exported the final mix onto Sam's memory stick to import it into Premiere.

Editing the Music

We decied that the song 'The Dog Days are Over' is too long for our production so we asked the head of the music department in our school to help us cut out certain parts of the song.

The lines that are in bold are the chorus' and verses we have decided to cut out:

happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
and washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming so you better run

Run fast for your mother run fast for your father
Run for your children and your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
the dog days are done
Can’t you hear the horsesCuz here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you hadand what was left after that too. oh.

Happiness it hurt like a bullet in the mind
Struck from a great height
by someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
can you hear the horses
Cuz here they come

Run fast for your mother and fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses because here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are gone
Can you hear the horses because here they come

This has cut down the song by a significant amount which will make this production easier to complete in the time we have.

New Locations

Here are some picture of where we will be filming the rest of our production. In this location we will film Georgia running. Origninally she was supposed to be running down country roads but due to location changes she will now be running down this path.
This park is located in Cheshunt

Filming on Sunday 10th October

We have come to the conclusion that we will do some of our filming in Cheshunt instead of Dane End because it is easier for the team members to get there as Dane End is too far away for Emily and Georgia to reach, however i was not able to join my team mates on this day of filming as i was scheduled to work on this particular day.
When i rejoined my team mates at school they had told me that there was a problem with the camera and that after they had filmed all day and finished the shots, the camera didn't actually record any of the footage. This is because the tape heads in the camera were dirty which meant it couldn't capture. This has now taught us we should check the cameras play back before we start filming to prevent further loss of work and time.

This weekened we have planned to re shoot all the lost footage in order to complete all filming to be able to make our first cut before the 3rd of October when we will be presenting it.

Capturing our footage

On Wednesday the 6th of October we captured all the filming we did from the 3rd too look back on all the different shots we did in order to tick off what we have done and to list all the shots we still need to do.

Here I have print screened some shots from our previous filming.

I have chosen one good shot, one bad shot and a print screen of our editing line.

The first picture is in my opinion the best shot as it is a panning shot to the right of Georgia running towards the bridge and then across it. I think this shot is successful because it flows and there are no harsh jolts whilst the camera moves, we keep her in the centre of the shot as we keep pace with her and because we got this shot correct in one go which shows it's successful.

The second picture is of the least successful shot. This is a medium shot of Georgia spinning 360 desgrees multiple times whilst looking up to the tree tops, however when filming this it was difficult for georgia to stay within the frame because she got dizzy and confused with the uneven ground. We will attemp this shot again but cannot guarentee it will work.

The third picture is of our editing line. We have captured our footage and added the music. We will now start cutting and editing shots and put them in order to build up a first cut of our production.

Shot list for filming on Sunday 10th October

We have arranged to meet in Dane End at Sam's house on the 10th to do another day of filming.
Here is a list of shots we want to have by the end of Sunday:

  • Georgia running down country roads in Dane End
  • Montage of shots of her running in the morning, afternoon and evening
  • Georgia running through the woods
  • Shots of horses galloping through the field

Feedback on filming

I feel that our filming was very successful as we got many shots that we planned.
We ended up spending the day filming in Hertham Common in Hertford because when we arrived at Ware train station it was closed due to construction on the tracks.

Our shots turned out very well that day as the lighting was perfect because it wasn't too sunny which meant there were no harsh lines and shadows, and it was a little cloudy which helped even out the light across the landscape we were using. However towards the end of our filimg it started to rain so we had to pack up and finish which meant we got all the shots we needed but didn't have time to film any extra footage.

Shots we managed to film:
Multiple shots of Georgia on the bridge
Shots of Georgia lip syncing
Shots of Georgia walking through the woods
Shots of Georgia hiding
Close ups of Georgias face
Georgia walking towards the camera
Georgia running
Hair flicking
Skirt swaying
Shots of feet running

Extra shots:
Shots of the river
360 degree shot of the tops of the trees
Point of view shot of Georgias feet as she is running.
Panning shot of georgia running with a following shot through the woods.
Long shot, medium shot and close up of Georgia running her hands through the long grass
Close up, medium shot, and long shot of Gerogia sitting in the tree

After we finished filming Sam took the camera home with him in order to get some shots of the horses running, however the horses have been very unpradictable this week so it was not possible to film this. We will try again on Sunday 10th as we have arranged another day of filming in Dane End to get the shots of Georgia running down the country roads and the horses running.

Shot list for filming on Sunday the 3rd of October

We have arranged to meet up in Ware and Hertford on Sunday 3rd to do a full day of filming. Here is a list of shots we want to complete on this day.

  • The train leaving the station
